AI predicts Heart Attacks ten years in advance
Artificial intelligence technology that can accurately predict people’s risk of suffering a heart attack nearly a decade before it strikes will soon be available on the NHS.
The breakthrough could save tens of thousands of lives a year by spotting at-risk patients whose heart problems cannot be detected using present scanning methods.
Researchers at Oxford University have developed an AI tool that can read normal CT scans, which are given to 40,000 patients a year who complain of chest pain. About three quarters of patients who have a CT scan will be told that the results are normal because they show no sign of narrowing of blood vessels, but about one in five of these patients will go on to suffer a heart attack within the next decade.
